Philip Thomason began training as a stone carver in Oxford working on Queens College and Christ Church Cathedral.

In 1976 he moved to Somerset and worked as Principle Carver on the restoration of the Wells Cathedral West Front for 7 years.

In 1983 he commenced work with The Department Of The Environment (English Heritage) producing carvings for Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, R.M.A. Sandhurst,Royal Naval College Greenwich and Windsor Castle.

It was whilst working with the D.o.E. that he encountered the work of Eleanor Coade (Coade Stone) and set about developing a clay body that was a true match to the original material enabling sympathetic restoration of Coade to be carried out – seamlessly matching original fragments with fresh modelling.

The natural progression into making new work in conjunction with restoring the 18th and 19th century originals, coupled with the background and understanding of architectural decoration inspired the creation of ThomasonCudworth in 1987.

To the present day ThomasonCudworth have restored numerous important Coade sculptures and have been commissioned to produce new work worldwide.
