A Late 18th Century George III Marble and Ormolu Fireplace
A late 18th century English statuary marble chimneypiece with columns and panels in a grey spar marble. A plain centre tablet flanked on either side by the blue/grey spar marble panels, framed in gilt brass. The capitals in carved white marble of Ionic design with swags in gilt brass. The bases again in white marble and gilt brass which has also been introduced into the sunken panels of entwined foliate and berries, forming the soffit and internal returns. The corner blocks adorned again with decorative conforming gilt brass and the under mantle with cross ribbon gilt brass decoration. Similar marble is incorporated into one of the chimney-pieces at Castle Howard.
A very unusual and rare chimneypiece in somewhat architectural design, yet adorned with gilt brass and rare English spar marble.
