An extraordinary and rare 18th century fireplace in the Rococo manner. Exquisitely carved in high and low relief. The florally carved jambs supported on square foot blocks with deeply scrolled and beaded acanthus leaf, with foliage carving within panels surmounted by bouquets of flowers and descending bell drops to the sides. The inverted frieze with rocaille decoration, the centre being a large shell surrounded by acanthus, flowers and foliage. The exaggerated and protruding C scroll end blocks supporting the serpentine stepped and moulded mantle which sweeps out and sits proud. A very fine example, in superior quality Italian statuary white marble.
