Cupid and Cameos
We have recently taken stock of some amazing surrounds but that doesn’t stop us being excited when we come across another; and this antique French Renaissance style fireplace is certainly something to be excited about.
Renaissance means ‘rebirth’ in French and the period signified a return to the carefully proportioned architecture of classical Greek and Rome after the asymmetrical and ornate gothic style that preceded it.
This is a mid 19th century style surround in superior quality Carrara marble with high and low relief carvings; the most notable being the splendid Cupid caryatids. Carved with superb attention to detail, they support a frieze of carved, scrolled foliage, and blooms with apposing, jousting cupids at the centre.
A huge rectangular moulded shelf, and end blocks with male and female cameos add the final touch to this unique creation. See it by clicking this link.
